East Carson Street Musical
Some people said I should leave
There’s no use hanging around
If you want to make it boy
You better get out of this town
But they got it all wrong
Just as wrong as can be
I want to live with my friends
Live with my family
So please understand
The roots they run deep
I can feel this town breathe
I can hear its heart beat
So meet me tonight
Down on East Carson Street
East Carson Street, a World Premiere musical that celebrates America's resilience and goal of becoming a "more perfect union," is a sweeping story spanning four decades and 3 generations of the Popovich’s, a family living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the 1980's, Pittsburgh, like many cities and towns in the United States, saw the lives of its citizens turned upside-down with the worst recession since World War II. The demise of the steel and coal industries in the area led to unemployment numbers of close to 20%. Families were being torn apart as young people, especially, sought opportunities elsewhere while those who stayed home dealt with rising levels of substance abuse and crime.
Fast forward to the 2020's and Pittsburgh, with its focus now on innovation, medicine and technology, has once again become one of America's great cities. The mills, mines, and pollution are all but gone, replaced by parks, clean water and thriving communities. It is a true testament to the greatness of our people.
East Carson Street, with music by Pittsburgh icon Joe Grushecky and book by Jonathan Rosenberg tells a compelling story that is truly one for "our times." Family, faith, community and courage.
